The Best of Times

The Best of Times

Ahhhh, New Years Eve.
As it is a chilly 20 degrees outside I decided that my time was better spent indoors today. After watching a few re runs of my favorite crime show I decided that my time was better spent reflecting on this crazy 2008 year. I have no idea where my path leads, or which roads I will take. But sometimes I like to look back on where I have been to know how far I have come.

This should warm things up

Here is a farm year in review on the horses.

Jack, or Jumping Jack Attack as I like to call him, has settled in nicely. I have had him almost two years now and really enjoy having him around. He has learned how to jump, look at those knees! and is improving on his flat work. This past summer I discovered that Jack is a clever boy. He would step on the bottom of the wire fence to pull it down a little and then easily reach over and eat the yummy hay growing in the hayfield.

Mark, a.k.a. Tainted Mark, is slowly progressing. His ankle is getting better, however when the ground is really muddy or hard he does tend to limp a little more. We started going on walks in the ring this summer to help stimulate Mother Nature's healing process and it seems to be helping. Mark is one of the sweetest horses I have ever known. He always greets me and enjoys a quiet cuddle anytime I am in the paddock.

Mia, a.k.a. Delicate Deluxe, has been a wonderful addition to Shallow Hill. She is turning out to be a wonderful teacher. Mia is quiet and kind to everyone that rides her. After being a western horse, I think Mia enjoys her new English career teaching students everything from learning how to post to jumping a course.

Rio, a.k.a. Sweet Scenario, is turning out to be one nice horse. He is now been officially broke for one year. This summer he has learned some basic flat work, flying changes, and low level jumping. He is still considered green and has an eager yet calm attitude toward any challenge he faces. He quickly became my favorite to ride, often figuring out exercises in only two tries.

Tar, a.k.a. the old man. I have had Tar for a number of good years and hope to have him for many more. We figure he is somewhere around 30. He did a few walk trot lessons for me this past summer and got to show off his happy trot. Being an older horse we do have to play keep the weight on the old horse game, but lucky for me Tar has a good appetite. I worry about his eyesight, teeth, and health in general but I know he is very happy.

My little pony, Xander. A.k.a Alexander the Great. What a great pony! He loves the kids and I think really enjoys teaching them. I have had Xander a year now and just adore him. He is very quiet with the kids and often has that wonderful expression on his face.  And wow does he get fuzzy in the winter!
